JOB TITLE: Custodian
BOARD APPROVAL DATE: January 9, 2004
SUMMARY: Keeps the school building in clean and orderly condition and tends furnace, air conditioning, and boiler to provide heat, cool air, and hot water for school operation by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Serves as a positive role model for students.
- Completes all assigned duties on a regularly scheduled basis.
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and vacuums hallways, stairs, classrooms and office space.
- Empties trash and garbage containers.
- Maintains building, performing minor and routine painting, plumbing, electrical wiring, and other related maintenance activities. Replaces unit vent filters.
- Notifies the building administrator and district maintenance supervisor concerning need for major repairs or additions to lighting, heating, and ventilating equipment.
- Cleans snow and debris from sidewalk.
- Mows lawn, trims shrubbery, and cultivates flowers.
- Performs other custodial duties as assigned by the principal and maintenance supervisor.
- Is present and assists with cafeteria cleanup during all lunch periods.
- Assists with unloading and storage of commodities and other deliveries as needed.
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

EDUCATION AND /OR EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or a general education(GED) certificate; experience as a custodian.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, taste and smell.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee may occasionally be expected to move and/or lift 100 pounds or more but may obtain assistance or use equipment and carts to facilitate these tasks. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving, mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of radiation and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to occasionally loud.
The employee is identified to be at Category 1 level of risk for exposure to bodily fluids including blood and human issue and must make "universal precautions" standard operating procedure.
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:
The employee will be evaluated in accordance with the district requirements and within the timelines specified by law.
