JOB TITLE: Bus Driver

 

BOARD APPROVAL DATE: January 9, 2004

 

REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor                                      

 

SUMMARY: To provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district’s curriculum and extracurricular program.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Serves as a positive role model for students.
  • Obey all traffic laws.
  • Obey all Ohio Department of Education and East Muskingum Local School District rules and regulations.
  • Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
  • Maintain discipline when students are on the bus.
  • Keep assigned bus clean.
  • Keep to assigned schedule.
  • Provide safe transportation in all types of weather.
  • File all required reports in a timely manner.
  • Check bus before each operation for mechanical defects.
  • Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
  • Load and discharge students only at authorized stops.
  • Exercise responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
  • Transport only authorized students.
  • Report all accidents and complete required reports.
  • Enforce regulations against smoking/tobacco products and eating on the bus.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor.
  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
  • Maintain current knowledge and understanding of board policies and administrative guidelines.
  • Cooperates with District and Building Administration.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directly supervises all students on the bus route and during bus loading and unloading.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

 

USER-DEFINED:

The employee must have basic knowledge of board policies and procedures.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and /or ability required.  Must have a valid license to drive a school bus.  An appropriate abstract of his/her driving record from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. EDUCATION AND /OR EXPEREINCE:

High school diploma or general education(GED); or up to three month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel objects; tools; controls; reach with hands and arms; and taste or smell. 

 

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving, mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock.  The employee occasionally works in outside weather and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of radiation and vibration

 

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to occasionally loud.

 

The employee is determined to be at risk of exposure to bodily fluids including blood, human tissue or body fluids and must make “universal precautions” a standard operating procedure.

 

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:

The employee will be evaluated in accordance with the district requirements and within the timelines specified by law.
